If the word “ideal” had a physical form it would be Gator elimination day. Weather was perfect; low & easy to read wind. The atmosphere was cheery, light & relaxed. During my first round bye everything went well, my shot felt strong; the 3 ends of practice went fast. In that time I got a good gauge on how my day would go. My 1st round started in the quarters & I was ready to go, it felt like it went by at lightspeed. I felt good momentum, had lots of fluid/snack & good conversation behind the line. To say I felt very relaxed would be an understatement. The next round, semis, was different. Everyone would be shooting on a single line, no break while a second line was shooting. I feel like when it gets to this point it’s a test of endurance & determination. During this match I knew that all I had to do was execute my shot & be aggressive. I retired my opponent in 3 straight sets & took a breather before the gold medal final. I took every spare moment to fuel up with whatever I could grab.
The final match of the day was exciting; it was against my friend Richelle, knowing her it was going to be a strong match. I don’t remember how the first few ends went but I do remember when I was up 4-2 & Richelle was able to bring it to a 4-4 tie. It was up to the 5th end to decide it all. I told myself to stay in the moment & focus on having good form. It paid off & I won the points finishing 6-4. To be honest I was in a little shock after we scored the end, I didn’t realize I won. After I turned in my scorecard & walked away from the DOS it all started settling in. People were congratulating me & telling me good job & I realized I had done it!
This USAT was probably the most fun I’ve ever shot, not because I won, but because the atmosphere & the people around me. I was less stiff & more laid back; did a lot more laughing & had more meaningful conversations.
Overall, I would say this is an experience that I will never forget & remember fondly.
